Search Engine
Information
What is search engine
optimisation?
The term used to describe the marketing technique
of preparing a website to enhance its chances
of being ranked in the top results of a search
engine once a relevant search is undertaken. A
number of factors are important when optimising
a website, including the content and structure
of the website's copy and page layout, the HTML
meta-tags and the submission process.
What's the difference
between a search engine and a directory?
One fundamental difference between search engine
and directory is the way websites get entered
into their index. A search engine sends out spiders,
i.e. programs which follow links, and capture
details about web pages. Exactly what details
are captured changes from search engine to search
engine. The reason this presents a fundamental
difference between search engine and directory
is that directories depend on people entering
details about a web page and human editors actually
approving (or disapproving) them.
What is ‘Pay-Per-Click’?
A search engine that determines ranking according
to the amount you pay for each click from that
search engine to your site. Examples of PPC search
engines are Overture.com. The highest ranking
goes to the highest bidder.
Why do some sites
rank higher than others in search engine positioning
results?
Each search engine uses its own algorithm to determine
which web pages should rank more highly than others.
It all depends on how your website fairs using
the alogrithm of the particular search engine.
These algorithms are changed frequently to counteract
'spammers' from gaining top ranking through unethical
techniques. |
